SP Transfer Run
Description:
A westbound Southern Pacific transfer run was passing the LSU Dental School on the Southern Railway’s New Orleans Terminal Co. subsidiary, en route from the Louisville & Nashville’s
GENTILLY YARD
to the Espee’s
AVONDALE YARD
. The transfer run was powered by seven locomotives, which had gone to the L&N on two separate trains. Combining power on transfer runs from the L&N to the SP was not unusual because there was typically an imbalance of traffic, with more eastbound trains. The locomotives were SSW GP20R 4137, SP GP20’s 4085 and 4079, SSW GP20R’s 4143 and 4148, SP GP35 6664 and SSW GP35 6502.
